No doubt — our end goal is to achieve these product goals for the time-box considered. I love prescribing 90-day time-boxes as 90-days short enough to have strategic focus and long enough to deliver some great value!

So, What is a Product Goal?

Your Product Goal is the North Star which refers to a clear and overarching goal or vision that guides your product team in a specific direction. The North Star plays a crucial role in providing direction, alignment, and purpose to your product teams. It acts as a constant reference point that guides decision-making, motivates you, and you team stay focused on its long-term objectives while remaining adaptable to changing circumstances.

Craft the Quarterly Roadmap

Well, here is the game-changing tip! Most teams try defining their goals in one liner statement — let’s me tell you — No Way! It’ almost impossible to clearly articulate a goal in a ten-words sentence — Here is the game changing formula!

Use OKRs — yes, Objectives and Key Results!

What are OKRs?

In the book, Measure What Matters written by John Doer, Larry Page the founder of Google, wrote his forward:

As much as I hate process, good ideas with great execution are how you make magic. And, that’s where OKRs come in.

Larry Page further emphasizes that

OKRs are a simple process that helps drive varied organizations forward. We have adopted it over the years. we have made it a blueprint and make it yours, based on what you want to see happen.

For leaders, OKRs give a lot of visibility onto an organization. They also, provide a productive way to push-back. For example, you might ask “Why can’t users load a video on YouTube almost instantly? Isn’t that important than this other goal you are planning to do in the other quarter?
